Hoopoe books

Through repeated readings,
these stories provoke fresh insight and more flexible thought in children

Hoopoe Teaching-Stories are unique treasures from a part of the world under-represented in children’s multicultural literature. (Click here.)

For more than a thousand years, all over Afghanistan, Central Asia and the Middle East, children have been entertained and taught by these stories and have continued to tell them in adult life. They are called Teaching-Stories because they were designed, not just to entertain, but to foster thinking skills and mental flexibility. They encourage qualities in children such as self-reliance, courage, peaceful negotiation rather than violent confrontation, and much, much more. (See Library Media Connection click here.)

Prior to the Soviet invasion and subsequent chaos in that country, Afghanistan was an important cultural crossroads. It was a place where many ethnicities – Indian, Chinese, Persian, Turkish, Afghan and Mongolian – lived alongside each other in harmony; where a rich, diverse culture developed over many centuries; and where the ancient art of storytelling flourished to pass on wisdom and knowledge to young and old alike. These tales, collected from oral and early written sources by the Afghan savant Idries Shah, now provide a beautiful and positive representation of that art and culture with prize-winning illustrations that provide additional enchantment and context.

These universal tales will help children, parents and educators get a better understanding of this part of the world – what we have in common and what we can learn from each other.

These books have been enthusiastically received by reviewers, educators and librarians across the country.
